Martyrology

How to contribute

This site is the work of a few people, on a book of thousands of eulogies in several editions. It needs more eyes. If you are a scholar or a student of liturgy, hagiography, Latin or church history, your review can make it better for everyone who reads it.

What needs review

  • The texts. Do the eulogy texts on this site match the printed originals, word for word?
  • Misprints. Have you found a misprint in an edition that the site does not yet mark with [sic! expected: …]? (See Notes, misprints and errata.)
  • The identifiers. Does an identifier follow the rules? And above all, can you recognize the eulogy from it: is it clear who is meant, and which one?
  • Run-in eulogies. Are there places where two eulogies have been run together as one, and need to be split?
  • Subjects. Is the subject of a eulogy, the saint or celebration it names, given correctly in Latin, Italian and English?
  • Places. Is each place a eulogy names identified correctly, on the map and in its data?
  • Anything else that is wrong, unclear or missing.

How

Tools for curation are coming soon to this site: enabled users will be able to propose corrections directly from the page they are reading. This page will link them as soon as they are ready.

Repositories

The site is built from four repositories on GitHub, three of them public:

  • martyrology-api: the API that serves the editions, their days and their eulogies to this site and to anyone else (see Data and sources).
  • martyrology-frontend: this website.
  • crmedr: the open registry of identifiers, subjects, places and misprints (see Data and sources). Corrections to the identifiers, subjects and places belong here.
  • martyrology-texts: the texts of the eulogies. It is private, because the texts of the 2004 editions are under copyright; the API reads them from it.

If you find a problem before the curation tools are ready, you can open an issue on the public repository it concerns.
